Gameloft art tests

Hey Folks! It's been quite some time since my last art blog entry. I thought I'd post my Gameloft art tests that a did a little while back in 2013. I'll try to post more regularly. :)

Life Drawings!

Since it's been a really long time, I thought I'd post these life-drawings from a little while back. The wonderful thing about this particular model is that she had a very unique hip to torso ratio, and I couldn't help but exploit that really exaggerated relationship in these studies.

Just a lot of fun to work on :)

Hey guys!

Been a really long time since my last blog post. I started working at Gameloft Montreal as a cover/ concept artist for some time now and enjoying the projects and people I'm working with.

I plan on updated more frequently as well :p

Painting Study

Just a little Levitan study I did a little while ago. Overcast paintings are nice once and a while :)

Life Drawing - Clothed Figure

Last week, an old college friend of mine, Dhamindra Jeevan brought be to a clothed figure drawing class. I had a blast drawing the dress (gets a little repetitive drawing nude figures sometimes). DJ is an AMAZING concept artist around these here parts. He teaches at Syn Studio, so if you ever get a chance, take the man's class! His digital life-drawings are pretty insane too.

Life Drawing - 2 models

I had a great time life drawing at Syn Studio last week. I never had the chance to draw 2 models at the same time. It was really challenging trying to get a statement of 2 forms in a short amount of time, but I really enjoyed trying to capture the energy they generated together.

Weapon Design

Just some rifle designs based on actual rifles. It was a nice reintroduction into using 3D again to help me with the design.

Rifle design based on existing rifles. Initial designs were done in 2D and was later brought into Maya to create a rough 3D model to be used as a base for texture work in Photoshop.

Inspiration tree of the “TK-N9” and the various rifles and parts that inspired it's design. It was largely inspired by the “XM8-AR”.

Rough 3D models used as a base for texture work on Photoshop.

Detailed profile designs that were taken from the thumbnail silhouettes.

Thumbnail silhouettes. Exploring shape design and looking for an overall “coolness” for a rifle concept while trying to maintain a real world application for the design.

I'm taking an environment class here in Montreal with the uber talented Meinert Hansen. I learned a lot about environments and how to work with textures. A few folks were asking me how I generated thumbnails for the martian landscape concept, so I might write something up and post it up here.

Life Drawing

Got back into life drawing again after quite some time. Working out the ring rust.
If you guys are ever in Montreal, you should check out Studio Syn. It's a great place to go life drawing and the folks over there are super nice.

John Berkey Studies

I'm a HUGE John Berkey fan. I had some time a little while ago and went through his body of work and did some quick studies of his beautiful ship designs. The man doesn't get nearly enough credit for his contributions to the sci-fi genre.

Funcom Environment Test

So this was an environment test I did for Funcom in December. Unfortunately, the company has seen some hard times and they had to close off that position. But it was a lot of fun to work on. Hope they recover soon.

Morning Warm-Up

Just a really quick sketch of a former work buddy. I was actually doing morning warm-ups and I had a sketch that was totally morphing into his likeness. It was funny since I saw him a few days earlier on the metro coming from badminton. He's considered to be a bit of a viking-programmer so I combined both elements together.

Hope he doesn't burn down my house for posting this :s

Lord of The Rings Quick Sketches

Just some quick sketches I did while watching Lord of The Rings. I used a square brush exclusively that I totally forgot about.

Nintendo DS sketches

I absolutely LOVE Nathan Fowkes' gouache studies. If you haven’t seen his amazing work, check out his land sketch blog: http://nathanfowkes-sketch.blogspot.ca/ (his life-drawings and paintings are mind blowing too).

I was inspired to study his sketches by doing some quick digital studies on my Nintendo DS. I don't have the full range of tools that's afforded with Photoshop (layers, undo's, brushes, etc), so it's a nice exercise :)

Just some work I did many moons ago for a pitch for a new Earthworm Jim game. This was before I learned how to paint.

I miss doing pencils and inks. Maybe I'll get to do some cartoony work in the future...
